Quick Reminder

By Jeff Simpson

H/T the Political Environment:

"I want my Cabinet secretaries to have branded across their heads, '250,000 jobs,'" Walker said at a December 2010 meeting ofthe Dairy Business Association. "I want them to know their job is on the line because my job is on the line to create 250,000 jobs in the private sector."

  1. Walker’s promise to create 250,000 jobs always made me scratch my head. The Republicans’ mantra is that government does not create jobs. And they can’t because their economic and political philosophies eliminate jobs.

Republicans want small government with less government spending. With less money being spent, there is less money for government workers and employees of contractors to spend. This lowers the velocity of money, slowing economic activity which translates into a cascading cycle of fewer jobs. The facts are that government spending stimulates the economy and creates jobs. But Republicans deny those facts.

Republican business owners, especially the wealthy elite, believe in the non-compromising capitalism of maximizing profit, without thought to the consequences. Today’s capitalists will move their factories and jobs anywhere in search of lower labor costs, without any regard to the other costs involved.

American factory jobs have moved by the millions to Communist China. Workers there are paid a pittance and forced to work long hours in unsafe working conditions. Pollution is allowed to go on unabated, which saves money but at the cost of long-term environmental disasters. And I am sure Mao Zedong is turning in his grave as a select few Chinese are becoming fabulously wealthy upsetting the social order and breeding corruption.

A further consequence of contemporary American capitalist philosophy is that America’s long-term economic health is taking a beating. 100 years ago, Henry Ford decided to pay his workers more money so they could afford to buy his cars which made his company more successful. This philosophy is dead among contemporary American capitalists.

The rejection of Ford’s wage philosophy results in American workers having less money to spend while more wealth becomes concentrated in fewer hands. This is severely retarding American’s long-term economic health including higher structural unemployment. It also increases social problems and the many costs associated with the increased struggles facing the majority of Americans.

In summary, Scott Walker and Republicans cannot create jobs because it is not in their DNA. And I have not even touched on how Walker is looking backward at what jobs to create, rather than embracing new technologies that will create the future’s jobs.
