Chicago Teacher's Strike!

This week the Chicago teachers union could not come to a contract agreement and they voted to go on strike!

This has the right wing noise machine all up in arms.

So much so that they can not say enough bad things about the CTU and fill their supporters with as much hate and misinformation as possible. Here is a post from Americans for Poverty - Wisconsin.
Chicago teachers go on strike because the contract offered to them only included 2% raises each year for four years. Teachers are picketing schools and parents are confused about what schools are open and when they will be open.

How is this the best option for the kids of Chicago? Our country needs education reform. We need options that give our kids the best possible opportunity, not just line the pockets of the teachers unions.

Typically AFP-WI is lying to you!   Let's take a look at the real story:

So what are the teachers fighting for?

A better school day: A comprehensive education including not only curricula in math, science and history but also art, music, physical education and foreign languages in all Chicago Public Schools.

Wraparound services and adequate staffing to support students in need: This includes counselors, social workers, librarians and school nurses with defined job descriptions as well as preparation and break time.

Recall rights for educators and school staff: Hundreds of teachers have already been displaced by school closures across the city and more will be by the planned closing of at least 100 more schools in the coming years.

Fair compensation: No merit pay, less reliance on standardized tests and pay commensurate to increased time in the classroom as well as inflation. CPS reneged last year on the contractually obligated 4 percent pay raise negotiated in 2007 and is currently offering annual 2 percent raises over the next four years. An independent fact-finder's report released in July recommended pay raises of 15-18 percent next year.

Apparently,  the paid Kochies @AFP-WI do  not think its best for the students to have art, music, phy ed, foreign languages or less than 40 kids in a classroom.  Remember that when they cal you and want you to take them seriously.    Unfortunately for all involved, there is more(there's always more),

This despicable post of desperaton, came from Tom Mcmahon:

Tomorrow, on 9/11, let's pause and reflect on the sacrifices of the highest paid teachers in country who are on strike. --- Pundit Review @PunditReview on the Twitters

How disgusting to try and tie the horrors of 9/11 to the Chicago Teachers strike to make a political point that really makes no sense.

However the righty bloggers and astroturf organizations are not the only people lying about the teachers strike, so is Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel

But Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) has decried the action as a “strike of choice.” Emanuel and Chicago aldermen claimed the city and the teachers’ union had agreed on everything except the process for re-hiring laid off teachers and the new evaluation system.
How do we know that Rahm is lying?  Because Paul Ryan supports him 100%

At least the people in Chicago who took to the streets to support the teachers get it!!

  1. All because the residents wont pay another 10 or 20 dollars on their property tax bill. Don't they know its for the children? Sickening.

  2. The negativity and hate spewing is just as bad in this article as what we see from the right wing nut jobs and left wing nut jobs. Way to stay above all that.

  3. Yes imbr if you really look at the issues, it is about the children.

Anon....I have no problem pointing out the craziness and lies of the right. Sorry if i do not do it as nicely as you would like it to be.

  4. That's strange, I heard the biggest hurdle is the merit pay changes. Although, it is worth noting that it is very nice of the best teachers who would benefit in such a system to strike in order to help protect the worst teachers who may get exposed. It would seem a bit of accountability would help the children. But that's a right wing idea. How did it get introduced in Chicago? At least their mayor is pretending to care about the taxpayer, I'm sure Milwaukees mayor would have given them all they asked for already.

    1. merit pay in education not onlydoesnt work its a horrendous idea.

Since when did accountability become a right wing idea???

If you righties understood the bigger picture beyond what is in your wallet today, you would understand that a strong public education system is an investment!

    2. I've heard valid arguments on both sides of that argument. But by not rewarding the best teachers there is no incentive to be better. Also, what means do you have without it to weed out teachers who are there just for the retirement, and not very good?

Judging by Obamas first term accountability isn't a democrat ideal either. He said himself if he didn't improve the economy he would not be worthy of a second term.

As a lefty, what do you do when something you have invested in does not perform as expected? Throw more money at it?

    3. merit pay pits teachers against teachers."divide and conquer.oh yeah."
where did we hear that from before ? hmm.

  5. I don't think merit pay works very well in education, so teachers are not really in favor of that because it doesn't help the students.

  6. OkIMBAR two things.....

    1. I know in our school district, and in most others, we have cut at least a million dollars from our budget, for at least the last 5 years....we are not throwing money at a problem we are cutting money thus causing the problem...

    2. can you tell me EXACTLY how we determine the "best teachers"?

  7. "how we determine the "best teachers"? "

Let the students vote for them. That's what democracy looks like! That's what democracy looks like!

  8. Amazing that Obama has not come to the aide of his former chief of staff. I get the impression he doesn't give a rats azz about Chicago school children.

    1. your impression is probably wrong.axelrod has a saying"he doesn't have any skin in the game".that is why he didn't help us in wisconsin.and now we are suppose to forgive and forget.

    2. Actually, I'm glad Obama stayed out of WI during the recall. We had a hard enough time as it was. It would have been over before it started if Obama had interfered.

    3. Starting to distance yourself from him already?

    4. I've said that all along. Why must you lie like that? Got nothing else to go on?

  9. How we determine who the best teachers are is worthy of debate. Assuming they are all equal isn't the answer. Seems to me even the dems down there have that figured out.
As far as the money, seems voucher schools are getting better results with less money. Can anyone explain why that is?

    1. Um, because they're not. If you had bothered to actually read the report instead of having talk radio's spin hand fed to you, you would realize just how ignorant that statement is.

    2. So we need merit pay you just have no idea how we pay on merit???

As capper said the explanation is easy...they dont

    3. Hard to argue with that logic. Lets just hope the students don't unionize. They would get a degree just for being there 12 years and a full pension starting at age 18 if your mentality prevailed.

    4. that was a hard right turn away from the subject at hand....wow .

  10. I forgot they are non union, how could they be a better choice?

  11. So you're doubling down on your ignorance? I'm sure it's just to confirm your own brilliance, right? Again, try learning the facts before you continue to make an ass out of yourself.

  13. I can't help but notice how Obama supports "the children." Yep, the kids are just human shields-- useful for avoiding any discussion of the reality of the situation.

When the chips are down, Obama's out of town, nowhere to be found.

Yes, Obama's in a tough position . . . because he supports the deprivation of public education and the diversion of the scarce remaining funds to private charter schools, etc.
