Paul Ryan's BIG Lie

I thought I would start out my writing here at Cognitive Dissidence, the same way that I did at Bloggingblue. Pointing out one of Paul Ryan(R-Wall St.) lies. Since I joined the grandaddy of them all, I thought I would address Paul Ryan's lie that is the Grandaddy of them all!!! The lie that Social Security is going broke!

The 2012 Social Security Trustees Report, will be released soon.   The findings are simple:

The most important take-away points from the 2012 Trustees Report will be that Social Security has a large and growing surplus; that without any Congressional action, Social Security will continue to pay benefits to America’s eligible working families for decades; and that with modest legislated increases in revenue, it will continue to pay those benefits for the next century and beyond.
There is even a simple fix, to the modest deficit that will arrive in 2033(it is not an immediate problem):

Social Security’s projected long-range funding gap could be eliminated without cutting benefits, which are modest in size, yet crucial. Congress could eliminate Social Security’s entire projected shortfall, which amounts to around 0.8 percent of Gross Domestic Product (about the size of the Bush tax cuts going to the top two percent of the population), by raising the Social Security tax cap so that the 6 percent of workers who make more than $110,100 a year pay taxes on all of their wages, just like everyone else who makes less than that amount. This would guarantee full payment of Social Security benefits for the next 75 years and beyond. There are many other ways to address the projected shortfall without cutting benefits which are already very modest, averaging just $14,781 a year for retirees – less than is paid in a year of minimum wage work, yet vitally important. Two-thirds of seniors rely on Social Security for half or more of their incomes. The benefits are also vitally important to children and spouses of deceased workers, to workers who have sustained permanent and serious disabilities and to their families.
Another couple of take - aways from this report;

1. When Paul Ryan tells you that Social Security is going broke: HE IS LYING!

2. To make sure Social Security remains solvent, GIVE TO ROB ZERBAN!

  1. So your answer to saving SS is taxing the rich? It seems to be the answer to all of our problems lately. Frankly the rich are already rich, and if they want to, they don't have to pay any tax. They just shelter their money and enjoy all the tax loopholes they want. The Dems running this country are 1%ers too. They aren't interested in paying more, I haven't seen any changes to the tax code to implement this. Not even when dems controlled both houses. They couldnt even pass a budget. Maybe Ryan's solution is wrong, but the answer isn't to keep going as if nothing is wrong.

  2. Sounds like you have given up, Imustbearacist.

Remember, a fiscally conservative person is one who doesn't spend more money than they make. An honest person is one who pays for what he or she buys or uses. You use the library, pay for it through taxes. But there is an indirect benefit as well. The ambulance driver and his paramedics went to public schools and that is why they save your life. So, everyone should be careful about spending and don't give away our tax money to fraudulent cases, but also, don't give away our money to private companies that are looking for profits over the good of the state.

We have hope and common sense and want to try to improve our state and country. You are right about both Dems and Reps. being 1%ers. So was FDR. That doesn't mean we have to vote for someone who is obviously bought off.

  3. your asking the wrong question, SS does not "need to be saved".

  4. Thanks for posting the video. Oh, and Ryan used his own families Soc. Sec. money for his college education...kind of gets lost in all of this.

  5. FDR was also vehemently against collective bargaining for federal employees. So what id Ryan used SS money for education. If it's there and you've paid into the system you can use it even if you want to reform it. Your only other choice is reminiscent of the guy who protested voter ID by refusing to vote.

  6. FDR was NOT "vehemently against" CB for federal employees that is a myth.

Ryan wanting to "reform" SS is also a myth.

"Government workers, however, don’t generate profits. They merely negotiate for more tax money. When government unions strike, they strike against taxpayers. F.D.R. considered this “unthinkable and intolerable.”"

  8. In prepping my kids up for the AP Government test was telling them about Social Security and how it actually takes in more than it spends. They literally did not believe me, and wanted documentation. Now mind you, I've said a lot of stuff over the year and most of it is true, but this one they wanted documentation. I found a couple of articles that sited the SS Admin Report of 2011. They literally did not believe me because it was absolutely opposite of what they had heard so far in their young lives. The quick teaching point became, Who is lying to you and for what reason.

    1. Its true, but did you teach them about the baby boomers impending mass retirement. And the fact that government has used the remainder of the money for their general fund all these years? The old saying fits, give a politician a stack of money and you know what he'll do with it.
