Two From Iola Done Good

For the regular reader, they already know that I have a special affiliation for central Wisconsin, including the Waupaca and Stevens Point areas.

Two Iola natives made the news this past week or so, but in a very positive way.

One was Austen Lane, who was a star player for the Iola-Scandinavia ThunderBirds. After leaving Iola, Lane went to Murray State and was just drafted in the fifth round by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The other news maker was Mary Chind, an Iola native that went on to UW-Stevens Point and is now living in Iowa, who won the Pulitzer Prize for spot news photography. Here is a copy of the award winning photo, as it appeared in the Des Moines Register, of a daring rescue of a woman caught beneath a dam:

The sad part of this story is that the woman's husband did not survive.

But congratulations are due to Austen and Mary for making their hometown so very proud.
