Of course, when that speech came out, it was denounced by the House Majority Leader at the time (Dick Gephardt,a Democrat), who called it a "paid political advertisement".
So...
Either it's OK for both men to have done what they did, and neither side should have complained then or now... or it's not OK for the President to give a speech like this and Democrats were correct to complain then, as Republicans are correct to complain now.
There are two strong possibilities here as to why both sides seem to ignore their past actions when charaterising the current situation. One, all of you are a bunch of partisan hacks... or... huh. I'll get back to you if I think of a second option.
